Hello, tourists! So, you decided to visit the world’s most livable (or, as of 2021, most locked down) city? You’ve made the right choice. But, here’s the thing, unless you came straight from the UK, or New York, there may be some things that you’re unfamiliar with.
The most important thing to know is, you need to get a Myki card. Now, those cost about $3 by themselves and you can get them from the station, or from a 7-11. If you’re a student, I recommend getting a concession Myki, but be prepared to show the inspectors proof that you’re actually studying, otherwise it’s a $350 fine!
The rules for using a Myki are… well they’re weird, to be honest – When you get on a train, you have to touch the myki to the reader that’s at the station (there won’t be a reader on the train itself). This is also known as touching on, and you do it before you board the train. You also have to remember to do it again when you get off at your station. However, if you’re on a tram, all you need to do is touch on. It’ll automatically somehow touch you off when you exit. Like I said, weird rules.
One unfortunate reality when it comes to transport though… it usually runs late, unless you’re running late… then it gets to the station early! But, I kid, Melbourne is a beautiful place, and the Public Transport system really helps you get around. Have a fun time!
