Welcome to Adelaide, one of the most Musical cities in Australia! What am I talking about? Stick with me as this article delves into quite a few fun facts about Adelaide.
So, going back to my first point, Adelaide, back in December 2015 was listed as a UNESCO city. UNESCO stands for The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Their goal is to promote world peace, and international cooperation. With how many music festivals and events there are in Adelaide, the Organization rightly decided to list it as Australia’s ONLY city of Music. UNESCO even wrote, about the city, “Adelaide stands out for many reasons but none more so than its creative culture. Being the capital of South Australia and 5th largest city of the country with 1.3 million inhabitants, music is at its core and an essential component of its cultural policies.”
If Music isn’t your jam, you can find what you like in the market. Which one? Well that depends on your interests but, considering Adelaide is also the place to find a large host of independent businesses, chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for. Amongst other accolades, it’s also the place to go to get the best coffee. You’ll have a wide range of business boutiques, whether on Ebenezer Place, also known as Adelaide’s “Artisan Oasis” where you can find unique local products, as well as new businesses. If you can’t find anything of interest there, then go to Adelaide Central Market. There you’ll find over 70 specialty shops in the one shopping centre. If you’re like me, and enjoy something sweet, I recommend visiting Haigh’s, which is South Australia’s most well known Chocolate Factory.
All this walking/riding around Adelaide would make a guy thirsty, luckily Adelaide is also the Wine capital of the world. That’s right, it’s counted amongst the greats such as Verona, Bordeaux and Porto. In fact, South Australia produces over 50% of all wines that are sold in your local brewery so, chances are if you bought a wine in Australia, it came from Adelaide.
Another cool thing about Adelaide is, it’s nicknamed the “20 Minute City”. Why? Because if you ever need to travel somewhere, you can reach your destination in the city within 20 minutes! So, tourists, you can feel free to explore no matter where in the city you are. Just hop on a bus, and you’ll be at your destination within 20 minutes!
Finally, Adelaide is known as the City Within a Park. That’s because there’s 760 hectares of parkland all surrounding North Adelaide and the city. So whether you enjoy the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, or prefer the calming fresh air of the great outdoors, Adelaide is the best of both worlds!
